Last Friday SV hosted the second monthly evening of design discussion accompanied by sausages and beer. Yvonne Krug, Nayeli Zimmermann, Ilka Kapica, Marco Gjergja, Ole Kaleschke, Norman Palm, Jan-Nico Meyer braved a lightning storm and gales on the roof of the DAZ.
The presentations began with Nick Kapica continuing where he stopped last month exploring typographic mistakes requested by the clients themselves, this time Sophiensæle were in the dock, accused of all sorts of typographic misdemeanours. Perhaps they knew this typographic witch-hunt was taking place and announced to SV earlier in the month that the ten year collaboration would soon end. The Sophiensæle want a new direction so the presentation became a celebration of ten years Sophiensæle posters. The »systems« were designed to control the individual and often irrelevant wishes of the performing groups, preventing that each poster would require many hours work and ensuring that the sum of all Sophiensæle posters would form a strong campaign for the venue itself. Possibly the Sophiensæle never realised that this was taking place now they must consider how they will manage one of the most valuable theatre brands in Berlin.
There was some disagreement regarding the sequence of poster designs, Nick was firmly of the opinion that the stripy poster concept existed before the legendary five year poster while former SV employee Yvonne insists that the five year poster started the series. A bottle of champagne was bet, the outcome of the wager will be announced at the next meeting.
Continuing the »systems« theme Marco introduced a collection of online gadgets that appropriately take decision making requirements away. These interactive pictures which were actually part of his diploma project and can be viewed at www.et-cetera.org. The presentations ended with a diploma project update from Jan-Nico, who was advised after an evening of systems to question the ones he was using to organise his book, slip the clutch and go for it, a lot can change in three weeks!
Ole noticed that the sausages were particularly tasty and therefore will make a surprise presentation at the next meeting which will take place on 29th June. Norman Palm will present a musical project and third time lucky —Justus Oehler from Pentagram— may let us know how the big boys do it.
